Peggy Chun added to the event by producing, with assistance of helpers, a series of nose paintings for visitors, who were clearly moved by her personal message at the back of her book (created one letter at a time), in which she confesses, ?I?m here to tell you how afraid I've always been, that overcoming fear is the only way to grow"īorn in Lawton, Oklahoma, Peggy has been a resident of Hawaii since 1969. Throughout it all, her colorful depictions of Hawaii?s lush floras and fabled locales maintain the ?Spirit of Aloha? for which she is famous, and prove Peggy?s belief that ?You don't paint with your hands you paint with your heart.? When she could no longer paint with her right hand, she taught herself to paint with her left then with her teeth and finally, using only her eyes and a special computer. The colorful children?s book traces Chun?s extraordinary artistic career through the eyes of her beloved cat Boo, with reproductions of her art from the time she began painting, through each new technique she developed to compensate for muscle deterioration from ALS, or Lou Gehrig?s Disease. ![]() 8, featuring a reading of the book by Famous Amos cookie king Wally Amos. ?The Watercolor Cat? by Hawaiian artist Peggy Chun and author Shelly Mecum sold nearly 500 copies at the well-attended premiere book-signing at Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana Shopping Center, Oahu, Hawaii, on Oct. ![]()
